Today Gotye posted a VJ mix of his song Somebody That I Used to Know, sourced from the hundreds of fan videos created in response to his infectious hit.
I love this creative response. Gotye has embraced the overwhelming, near ubiquity, of his song and created something honest and tender from hundreds of voices. It’s a little dizzying, Gotye has sampled recordings of his own piece that were created by strangers. I’m so glad that the internet can offer us this wee bit of creative experimentation.
This is the kind of creative colaboration that would be rendered illegal by legislation such as SOPA. These lovely moments of happenstance, emotional connection to a work of art that inspire other works of art, are the best the internet has to offer. Let’s all continue to work to keep the internet an open and free playground.
